Seven years in the running, organised by Rhizomatiks and curated by Daito Manabe, Flying Tokyo goes Super with a new space and larger audience, more speakers and a workshop programme. CAN was there and we are pleased to report back.

Infinity – New malleable subject matter by UE

Ending tonight, after a week of live streaming, is the latest in the series of artworks by Universal Everything (UE) that feature 3D humans shrouded in digital costumes. Titled ‘Infinity’, the new work is a live stream, always reshaping and evolving from one character to the next, generating an average of 3,180 unique characters per hour with a total of 50,000+ variations over the last week, stream live on YouTube, only for a few more hours!

Drone Aviaries & Field Guides – A Conversation with Superflux

Superflux are a design and foresight consultancy based in London. Founded by Anab Jain and Jon Arden in 2009, the studio produces prototypes and films that are simultaneously prescient, and playful—and now they can add ‘magazine publisher’ to that list of outputs. A few weeks ago the studio announced the first edition of Superflux, a Warren Ellis-edited periodical that would mutate with each edition. The first issue is a handsome A1 poster expanding on their recent work with drones and the duo has engaged in an interview with CAN about their new project.

Shedding Light on Squidsoup – A Conversation with Anthony Rowe

For more than a decade, the artist collective Squidsoup have been designing rich interactive experiences. From their early navigable sonic environments, through their playful experiments with computer vision and interest in ‘volumetric visualizations’, an email exchange between Squidsoup’s Anthony Rowe and CAN begat a mammoth interview abound light, sound and many of the collective’s projects.

Created by Random International, Zoological is a flock of autonomous, flying spheres that move collectively. Algorithmically driven, the spheres react to their surroundings and, sometimes, to people within their environment. 

Developed at the Ars Electronica Futurelab, Spaxels (a portmanteau word from space pixels) are LED-equipped quadcopters. They make up a drone swarm that can “draw” three-dimensional figures in midair.

Hobbes, a design and animation studio out of Detroit, MI, partnered with VWLS and Firefly Drone Shows to produce the music video for “High in Heaven,” performed and shot by drones.

Review of the exhibition last month at the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, South Korea – a collection of 12 works questioning the essential meaning and significance of the data world.

In the final week of the last year’s fall 10-week program at the School for Poetic Computation (SFPC), students presented their work in progress and its underly ideas in a public showcase. Here is a selection of projects that were presented.

Created by Danilo Sampaio and William Victor Camilleri at the The Interactive Architecture Lab at UCL/London, Hortum Machina, B is a half garden, half machine, cybernetic lifeform that explores new forms of bio-cooperative interaction between people and nature, within the built environment.

In the Eyes of the Animal is the latest installation by Marshmallow Laser Feast, commissioned by the AND Festival and set in Grizedale Forest, that takes visitors on a fascinating journey allowing them to fly above the forest canopy, come face-to-face with hi-definition critters and embody various animals as they traverse the landscape.

Pow2045 is a dance performance that combines generative design with urban choreography, focusing on a personal perspective towards duetts of man and machine.
