HOLO 2.5 Launched!

HOLO is ending the year with a bang: a new website. Launched six weeks ago,
HOLO.mg expands the print magazine into a more robust, ‘always on’ editorial and curatorial platform. Already a hub of activity, two major research projects are underway, and a slate of new stories and favourites from the HOLO archive are due in 2021.

Codex Anima Mundi – Interview with FUSE*

In the countryside surrounding the town of Modena, immersed in peace and silence, a big luminous country farmhouse is home to one of the most up and coming protagonist on the Italian digital art scene: fuse*. We were lucky enough to have the chance to meet up with Mattia, to ask him about his, and his team’s, passion for using innovative techniques and aesthetics used in their work, continually seeking new ways and means: the secret of their relentless and overwhelming success.

ARTSAT1: INVADER – Satellites for artistic exploration

On February 28, 2014, the world’s first art satellite, ARTSAT1: INVADER was launched as a piggyback payload of the H-IIA F23 launch vehicle. INVADER, a 10 cm cube 1U-CubeSat with a mass of 1.85 kg continued its steady operation on orbit, successfully completed an array of artistic missions before reentering the Earth’s atmosphere for disintegration on September 2.

Bright Matter: Afterglow – Joanie Lemercier on light, craft, and the sublime

From November to January 2014, Muriel Guépin Gallery in NY was the home to ‘Bright Matter’, an exhibition of enigmatic works by five international artists widely recognized for their spatial-aesthetic research, creative engineering, and stunning perceptual hacks. Superposition—5.84 Quintillion Facets of the Digital Sublime

This past Saturday Ryoji Ikeda presented the North American premiere of superposition to a crowd of several hundred at the Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal (MAC). As would be expected, the sixty-five minute multiscreen performance played out as kind of a data aesthetics megamix that flashed through a series of precisely choreographed abstract visual vignettes that grappled with the digital sublime and pondered the agnosticism of network culture.

In November 2019, CAN joined the biannual ECAL Research Day to find out how methodologies borrowed from science and engineering can strengthen creative practice—and drive the conversation.

After the experiments in physical programming in the “Traces” project we reported on last year, Dana Zelig decided to examine the possibility of adjusting the plastic to fabrics, by means of pressing them together, allowing the heat to manipulate the plastic, and the manipulated plastic to effect the adjusted fabric.

The Aurullia series are Tom Beddard’s interpretation of a fractal formula called Mandalay, a specific type of Mandelbox with additional parameters that allow scaling of the folding on individual axes, either in parallel or one after.

Coralie Gourguechon is a designer and a paper electronics maker. Hi projects aim to to demystify electronics by simplifying the execution of simple circuits in a graphical way and using paper.

Kinematics is a system for 3D printing that creates complex, foldable forms composed of articulated modules. The system provides a way to turn any three-dimensional shape into a flexible structure using 3D printing.
