Sol – An apparatus that depicts pathways of the sun

Sol is a custom made apparatus that can depict any position and any trajectory of the sun. Since the sun’s path changes every day, the exact path it takes through the sky depends not only on the date but also on the geographical location of the observer. Sol reveals the different pathways the sun takes from anywhere in the world.

Algae Bio-Reactor – Visualizing Data with Algae

Created by RAD at the University of Miami School of Architecture  (http://www.rad-um.com/),  Algae Bio-Reactor is a proof-of-concept prototype for a facade system that uses algae to sequester carbon, filter water and visualize data. The Algae Bio-Reactor prototype houses 64 jars in an 8 x 8 matrix.  Each jar is connected to individually addressable LEDs controlled…

Spirotrope – Stirling Engine powered Spirograph animation

Created by Witaya Junma. ‘Spirotrope’ is a device developed from the hypothesis that an interactive artwork can be created from unrelated objects in a way such that each object is still visible in its essence, whether in its form or its function. The criteria is that the viewer must experience this by interacting with the artwork directly.

Poetic Router – A tribute to the age of network awareness

Created by Saurabh Datta (automato), Poetic Router is a project that investigates the potential of the everyday manufactured IoT platforms beyond what is commonly discussed. Whereas most concerns of IoT are focused on security since every “Chip-‘ed” device is hackable and can be jacked and modded remotely. Poetic Router explores network transmission as a way to generate poetry by scraping the data found on the server links.

Codex Anima Mundi – Interview with FUSE*

In the countryside surrounding the town of Modena, immersed in peace and silence, a big luminous country farmhouse is home to one of the most up and coming protagonist on the Italian digital art scene: fuse*. We were lucky enough to have the chance to meet up with Mattia, to ask him about his, and his team’s, passion for using innovative techniques and aesthetics used in their work, continually seeking new ways and means: the secret of their relentless and overwhelming success.

The New Velocity – The faulty consistency of cartography

Created by Luiz Zanotello at the University of the Arts, Bremen, The New Velocity is a machine designed to plot the phantom Sandy Island using digital as a new analogy for its existence. The project investigates a charting error that persisted in cartographic maps even after the advent of digital media. It speculates how data and physical phenomena are entangled, and how in contemporaneity, the two have the same weight under digital media.
