Material Sequencer – Physical materiality of sound

‘Material Sequencer’ is an 8-step electromechanical sequencer, designed to emphasise the physical materiality of sound and sound production. The simple usb-powered sound-sculpture takes the sequencing process outside the black box and into the acoustic realm, flaunting its materiality and physicality.

VoxelChair – Designing for behaviour and properties of the material

Created by Manuel Jiménez Garcia and Gilles Retsin, ‘Voxel Chair’ is a first prototype designed using a new design software specifically developed for robotic 3D-Printing which rather than using pre-defined forms and then “slicing” these it into toolpaths or triangular patterns, allows to design and control thousands of line-fragments.

Mesh Mould – Spatial robotics and designing for material interdependencies

This research project by Gramazio Kohler Research at ETH Zurich titled ‘Mesh Mould’ investigates the unification of reinforcement and formwork into a single robotically fabricated material system. Developed with the use of industrial robots, the process allows ‘spatial robotic extrusion’, creating interdependencies of mesh typology and concrete.

Fundraiser 2024

Before we begin, we must highlight a critical aspect: our reliance on our members for support. Operating with extremely limited resources, each contribution is invaluable. Presently, we’re barely over 60% of our necessary funding, highlighting the stark reality of the starved publishing field. Now, behind the scenes, there’s a whirlwind of activity. Countless hours are…

NØ SCHOOL NEVERS 2024

NØ SCHOOL NEVERS is a unique international summer school, held in Nevers, in Burgundy, aimed at students, artists, designers, makers, hackers, activists and educators who wish to further their skills and engage in critical research around the social and environmental impacts of information and communication technologies.

Technological Accidents, Accidental Technologies

In this publication we inquire into a technology of accidents, but also into the forms of power and authority that accidents materialize. What are the specific accidents of – call them what you wish: artificial intelligence, machine learning, enhanced pattern recognition – systems?

Software for Artists Book: In Poetic Coalition

This publication is a coalition — it brings together experiences of combined action. With a focus on labor organizing within the arts and tech industries, In Poetic Coalition explores the potential of creating alternative networks of education and challenging the material conditions that prevent us from enacting new realities with dignity and security.

Black Box Cartography – A critical cartography of the Internet and beyond – Vladan Joler

Over the past few years, Vladan Joler has been working (with the help of a network of data analysts, media theorists and cyber forensic experts) to bring to light some of the hidden layers of these systems. From the invisible algorithmic factory of Facebook to the visual and conceptual assemblage of a new extraction model, Joler’s representational tactics take us into the depths of today’s technological ecosystems.

Created by the students at the Zurich University of the Arts, ‘Remote Materialities’ module and to be presented at the upcoming Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, ‘Remote Materialities’ explores the future scenographies of our coexistence with robotic devices.

Created by Kimchi and Chips and currently on view at the Somerset House in London, HALO is a new installation in the series of works by the Seoul based Mimi Son and Elliot Woods where light is sculpted to create form that exists between material and immaterial.

Created by Tore Knudsen, ‘Pour Reception’ is a playful radio that uses machine learning and tangible computing to challenge our cultural understanding of what an interface is and can be. Two glasses of water are turned into a digital material for the user to explore and appropriate.

Created by Stella Speziali at ECAL, Tangibles Worlds explores the effects of tactile experience as a catalyst for full immersion in VR. It proposes a “black box” interface, an alt-plysical-universe to the VR experience, extending the immersion beyond visual and sound.

Mitchell F Chan’s “Digital Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility” updates the contract at the heart of an influential 1958 work by Yves Klein for the age of cyrptocurrency, the blockchain, and smart contracts.

Created by Marion Pinaffo & Raphaël Pluviange, ‘Papier Machine’ is a booklet gathering a family of 13 paper-made electronic toys ready to be cut, coloured, folded, assembled or torn.

Created by Berlin based Ralf Baecker, Random Access Memory is a fully functional digital memory. Instead of operating on semi-conducting components to represent either the binary states of 0 (zero) or 1 (one), the memory uses grains of sand as storage material.

Developed at the MIT Media Lab’s Mediated Matter Group, ‘Data-Driven Material Modeling’ refers specifically to the process of the creation of high-resolution, geometrically complex, and materially heterogeneous 3D printed objects at product scale.

Material Want is a collaborative project between Matthew Plummer-Fernandez and JODI, presented at iMal, Brussels between Sep – Oct 2016. The project is an assemblage of interrelated elements: mined 3D models, 3D-printed objects, a shop-front installation and an online shop, powered by both software automation and human computation.
