Review of the exhibition last month at the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, South Korea – a collection of 12 works questioning the essential meaning and significance of the data world.

One of the most recognized faces in biohacking, Josiah Zayner is the focus of the most recent edition of the New York Times’ Op-Docs series. “Gut Hack” chronicles his quest to alleviate his lifelong abdominal problems by killing the bacteria in his stomach and replacing it with microorganisms gleaned from an ‘ideal’ donor.

A project by Design I/O for TIFF Kids International Film Festival’s interactive playground digiPlaySpace, Mimic brings a UR5 robotic arm to life and imbues it with personality. Playfully craning its neck to get a better look, arcing back when it is startled – it responds to each child that enters its field of view.

Part of a new series of posts inviting artists and curators to share latest projects on CAN, we’d like to introduce you to Evan Boehm, and his latest collaboration with Nexus Studios. Solace is an interactive animated film based on celebrated science fiction writer Jeff Noon’s short story about a near future in which marketing and addiction are disturbingly intertwined.

In the final week of the last year’s fall 10-week program at the School for Poetic Computation (SFPC), students presented their work in progress and its underly ideas in a public showcase. Here is a selection of projects that were presented.

Created by Alexia Léchot at ECAL, Deltu is a delta robot with a personality that interacts with humans using two iPads. Created using arm technology normally found in 3d printers, Deltu uses three different applications on the iPad Alexia built for it, using symmetry as an interpretation, a mirror and a reflexion of our own image.

Riding high on the wave of massive interest in his most recent work “Hyper-Reality,” which depicts a super-mediated Medellín, Colombia of the near future, director/designer Keiichi Matsuda chats with CAN about augmented reality, Silicon Valley, and CGI shopping companions.

As the ACT Center in Gwangju, South Korea, and an all-star cast of more than sixty international artists, designers and cultural producers gear up for the inaugural edition of ACT Festival, the details of our four day program have begun to roll out – here are the highlights.

Created and performed by Mark Wheeler (aka Mark Eats), This City is an audio-visual performance that explores what happens when a soundtrack controls the world as much as the world influences its soundtrack. The project is a combination of a soundtrack and real­time generative visuals, both played live.

Created by Oslo based computational design studio Void, Irregular Polyhedron Study #1 is a physical representation of the basic components of computer graphics; the vertex and the edge and explores the perceptual gap between the flat and the spacious, the analogue and the digital.
