SMOG SEASON-Air Pollution Data

SMOG SEASON is a workpiece that pulled PM 2.5 data to satirically compare the bad effect of cigarette smoke on the human body with current Bangkok air pollution by expressing through pictures and warnings of a cigarette label.

As 2017 comes to a close, we take a moment to look back at the outstanding work done this year. From spectacular peformances, large scale installations, devices and tools to the new virtual spaces for artistic exploration – so many great projects are being added to the CAN archive! Here are a just few, 25 in total, that we and you enjoyed the most this year.

Created by Philipp Schmitt (with Margot Fabre), ‘Computed Curation’ is a photobook created by a computer. Taking the human editor out of the loop, it uses machine learning and computer vision tools to curate a series of photos from an archive of pictures.

Continuing his exploration of personal objects in the age of information overload, Manual Reader and Memory Device are two new devices by Ishac Bertran that address perception, personal data collection and memory.

Created by Philipp Schmitt, Camera Restricta is a camera that locates itself via GPS and searches online for photos that have been geotagged nearby. If the camera decides that too many photos have been taken at your location, it retracts the shutter and blocks the viewfinder. You can’t take any more pictures here.

As part of a major festival collaboration later in the year, CAN is excited to announce the launch of the ‘Creators in Lab’ residency program at the brand new ACT Center in Gwangju, South Korea. Interdisciplinary practitioners take note!

483 Lines is the latest installation by Seoul based studio Kimchi and Chips and is comprised of 483 nylon threads with projections calibrated in 3D to the 16m threads using Rulr, an open source node-based toolkit developed by the studio.

Created by Madrid based creative studio Espadaysantacruz, Light Kinetics is an interactive light installation where the behaviour of light is controlled by a physics simulator.

Series of workshops by Ludwig Zeller at the Visual Communication Institute of the Academy of Art and Design in Basel to use generative systems to create visual instruments that mimic the expressivity of electronic music synthesizers.

Nimbes is an audio-visual installation designed for 360º immersive environments exploring boundaries between natural and artificial, and questioning the solitary nature of perception and observation and their relationship to both the cosmic and human scale.
