Persistence of Vision – Subverting civil infrastructure

Persistence of Vision is a public installation that adapts recognisable civil infrastructure into an interactive experience. The project is a reaction to our current state of surveillance, be it self initiated or passive, by revealing an often overlooked or ignored component of our city, and plays on many emerging technologies that are fast embedded into our daily lives, such as AI and computer vision.

Below Threshold

The human breath not only helps maintain life, but also carries a conversation, both in its assistance in the verbal conversation but in the chemical composition and interaction with nature. It is an ever-changing matrix with infinite components that maintains an intriguing complexity. “Below Threshold” is an installation that translates the natural landscape into a…

Rejected By My Own Robot — A Disobedient Kissing Machine

“Rejected By My Own Robot” is a disobedient kissing robot which is activated when the user approaches. The mechanical lips will extend towards the user as they inch closer. But the kiss will never be consummated: move too quickly or get too close and the lips will quickly retract, ultimately rejecting the user every time.…

Expressive Tactile Controls

Push buttons, sliders, switches and dials—we use such controls everyday and everywhere, but we barely notice them. Expressive Tactile Controls is a research experiment with a series of controls that are augmented by giving human personalities. What if each control had a unique personality and they could express its emotion only through haptic feedback? How…

ChineseWhispers – Inaccurately transmitted gossip

Created by Saurabh Datta, “ChineseWhispers” is an installation comprised of four head figures performing “Chinese Whispers” – a sequence of repetitions of a story, each one differing slightly from the original, so that the final telling bears only a scant resemblance to the original.

Amygdala MKI –– Artificially intelligent prosthesis

Created by Marco Donnarumma in collaboration with Neurobotics Research Laboratory and Ana Rajcevic Studio, Amygdala MKI is a prototype for an artificially intelligent prosthesis with only aim is to learn a purification ritual of “skin-cutting” found in animistic tribes, so it trains on its own body, endlessly.

Designing the Computational Image, Imagining Computational Design – An Excavation of Digital Form

“Designing the Computational Image, Imagining Computational Design” is an exhibition that excavates the foundation of computer-aided design and manufacturing and weaves together several ‘origin stories’ for contemporary consideration. The show recently closed after a seven-week run at the Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and CAN was fortunate enough to get a guided tour with curator Daniel Cardoso Llach as it was winding down.

‘Equilibrium Morphologies’ investigates how complex articulated membrane structures can be erected and tensioned through emergent behaviours of interacting forces and explore multiple states of equilibrium.

Surrogate is a body of work centred around issues of reproductive technology and bodily autonomy comprised of a series of physical and performative inputs and outputs to engage and provoke conversations about the topic.

Created by Jonghong Park, Vague Boundaries explores ‘boundaries’ between matter and phenomena. The custom made machine draws straight lines continuously on the paper by snapping the thread with the mechanism of the chalk line tool.

Created by Kachi Chan, ‘Sisyphus’ is an installation featuring two robots engaged in endless cyclic interaction. Smaller robots build brick arches, whilst a giant robot pushes them down – propelling a narrative of construction and deconstruction.

Created by Benedikt Groß, Maik Groß and Thibault Durand, Mind the “Uuh” is an experimental training device helping everyone to become a better public speaker. The device is constantly listening to the sound of your voice, aiming to make you aware of “uuh” fill words.

Chaotic Timer subverts the mechanism of a conventional timer. Its goal is to break out of one’s daily rhythmic flow. The device takes in the user’s stress level as input and asks the user to dial the duration of time to count down in minutes and seconds.

‘Breeze’ is a kinetic sculpture that investigates natural and delicate movement using the materiality of papers and a digital system. It consists of 96 note papers in a 6×16 matrix and creates sequential and random movement patterns in the matrix using wind from computer cooling fans.

Overflow is a site-specific kinetic and generative sound sculpture driven by real-time traffic cameras that monitor the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, a famous cable-stayed bridge spanning the Lower Tampa Bay connecting St. Petersburg to Terra Ceia, Florida USA.

Created by panGenerator, “Icons” is an exhibition exploring our shared cultural “imaginarium” of digital gestures, symbols, and artefacts, dragging them out onto a physical space, enabling audiences a direct, tactile confrontation and – also literally – a different visual perspective.

Created by Madeline Schwartzman, “Face Nature” is a series of experiments produced within the context of See Yourself X: Human Futures Expanded (SYX), a recent publication by Madeline that looks at human perception and the sensory apparatus and questions what will be the physical future of the head and the sensory apparatus in fifty years time.

Created by Michael Candy, “Synthetic Pollenizer” is a conceptual intervention in real-world ecological systems using artificial flowers. Inspired by natural pollenizers, these robotic replicas artificially pollinate bees, integrating into the reproductive cycle of local flora; an initiative into a cybernetic ecology.
