Dan Tapper is a British artist based in Toronto that combines his interest in code and celestial form and his recent research project “Turbulent Forms” visualizes and sonifies various cosmic phenomena. To mark the recent exhibition of this work (and related collaborations with several composers) we present this extended conversation with the artist about cosmology and data aesthetics.

Spheres of Influence – Drawing lifelines of the city

Created by the SCI-Arc Faculty members Curime Batliner and Jake Newsum for the for the third annual Mextropoli Festival, Spheres of Influence is a temporary installation installed in the patio of Laboratorio Arte Alameda. Part installation and part live performance,  it uses a robotic system from Staubli to paint layers of graphics (abstracted from the city) onto a series of human-scale spheres.

Bits And Pieces – An organic wave of Hoberman Spheres

Currently on show at Berlin’s NOME Gallery is the latest work by Nils Völker titled Bits And Pieces. The installation consists out of 108 mass-produced toy spheres hanging in the middle of the exhibition space, individually addressable and controlled, to create organic waves that appear to move throughout the space.

Helios 2024 – Imaging and imagining the sun

Helios 2024 is a celebration of the sun in its phase of solar maximum by audiovisual artist Dan Tapper. The exhibition gathers solar data from space organizations, as well as utilizing Tapper’s DIY devices that encode solar data into lo-fi playable records and reveal radio spectrum from the earth’s ionosphere and space.

Controlled Uncontrollables: SAD and the Bubble Printer

Developed in the context of Human 2 Objects project, the main concept was to reflect the human capacity to transform natural elements and to use the human body and its spatiality as an input for interactivity. As a result, the exhibition Controlled Uncontrollables is composed of two sculptural installations in a delicate interplay of art and technology.

Another Moon – Kimchi and Chips

Created by Kimchi and Chips, ‘Another Moon’ is a large-scale outdoor apparition that creates a technically sublime second moon in the sky. 40 towers collect the sun’s energy during the day and project that light back into the sky at night, creating a second moon overhead.

Sol – An apparatus that depicts pathways of the sun

Since the sun’s path changes every day, the exact path it takes through the sky depends not only on the date but also on the geographical location of the observer. Algae Chorus is a sound installation that collaborates with living algae, in real time, transforming their movement and photosynthesis process into sounds. The algae utilize the audience’s collective carbon exhalations within the exhibition space, revealing the mutual dependencies between humans and photosynthetic organisms.

Imagined as a tool to provide assistance to a conventional approach to sculpting, here an AI model is developed to seek out strategies that provide a constant improvement to how a given form is achieved.
