Drone Aviaries & Field Guides – A Conversation with Superflux

Superflux are a design and foresight consultancy based in London. Founded by Anab Jain and Jon Arden in 2009, the studio produces prototypes and films that are simultaneously prescient, and playful—and now they can add ‘magazine publisher’ to that list of outputs. A few weeks ago the studio announced the first edition of Superflux, a Warren Ellis-edited periodical that would mutate with each edition. The first issue is a handsome A1 poster expanding on their recent work with drones and the duo has engaged in an interview with CAN about their new project.

Looks Like Music – Yuri Suzuki at Mudam 2013

For its summer project in 2013, Mudam’s Publics Department invited Yuri Suzuki to conceive Looks Like Music, an audiovisual installation based on his work with Colour Chaser – beautifully designed but minimal vehicle that detects and follows a black line whilst it reads crossing coloured lines and translates them as RGB data into sound.

Shedding Light on Squidsoup – A Conversation with Anthony Rowe

For more than a decade, the artist collective Squidsoup have been designing rich interactive experiences. From their early navigable sonic environments, through their playful experiments with computer vision and interest in ‘volumetric visualizations’, an email exchange between Squidsoup’s Anthony Rowe and CAN begat a mammoth interview abound light, sound and many of the collective’s projects.

As per tradition each year, December is when we look back at the amazing work published on CAN. From ingenious machines and installations to mesmerising experiences that leverage new mediums for artistic inquiry – we added scores of projects to CAN’s archive in 2019. Here are some highlights.

‘Algorithmic Drive’ is an interactive installation and performance inspired by inspired by autonomous cars and dash cam compilations. The work plays with the tension generated by confronting the technologies used by mobile robotics with the unpredictable nature of the world.

Created by RNDR, Open Highway is a real-time light installation visualising highway vehicles at a scale of 1:1 from the Leidsche Rijn tunnel over the A2 highway in Utrecht.

Artificial Imagination was a symposium organized by Ottawa’s Artengine this past winter that invited a group of artists to discuss the state of AI in the arts and culture. CAN was on hand to take in the proceedings, and given the emergence of documentation, we share videos and a brief report.

Created at the Köln International School of Design and supervised by Prof. Andreas Muxel, Feedback Machines is a short student project that explores the concept of feedback loops, as an attempt to introduce students to physical computing as well as provide a perspective on the complex topic through experimental explorations.

Created by Danilo Sampaio and William Victor Camilleri at the The Interactive Architecture Lab at UCL/London, Hortum Machina, B is a half garden, half machine, cybernetic lifeform that explores new forms of bio-cooperative interaction between people and nature, within the built environment.

Keeping in line with her prolonged interest in representing urban flows, Tori Foster’s Cadence transforms vehicular activity into a four-minute loop of flowing streams of animated electromagnetic flip-discs.

RIOT by Leonard Mechiari is a game designed as a riot simulator to tell the story of conflict and social unrest, soon available for PC, Mac, iOS, Android and OUYA.
