Designing the Computational Image, Imagining Computational Design – An Excavation of Digital Form

“Designing the Computational Image, Imagining Computational Design” is an exhibition that excavates the foundation of computer-aided design and manufacturing and weaves together several ‘origin stories’ for contemporary consideration. The show recently closed after a seven-week run at the Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and CAN was fortunate enough to get a guided tour with curator Daniel Cardoso Llach as it was winding down.

Vitreous – Robert Seidel, 2015

vitreous is a new experimental film by Robert Seidel. Originally conceived as a media façade artwork of 80 × 24 × 14 Meters, it later developed in a large-scale projection of 4 × 14 Meters. The short film released this week and features a music score composed by Nikolai von Sallwitz.

Shedding Light on Squidsoup – A Conversation with Anthony Rowe

For more than a decade, the artist collective Squidsoup have been designing rich interactive experiences. From their early navigable sonic environments, through their playful experiments with computer vision and interest in ‘volumetric visualizations’, an email exchange between Squidsoup’s Anthony Rowe and CAN begat a mammoth interview abound light, sound and many of the collective’s projects.

Developed by the team at the MIT Media Lab’s Mediated Matter research group, the following research demonstrates multimaterial voxel-printing method that enables physical visualisation of volumetric data.

Created by Seoul based duo Kimchi and Chips, “The Light Barrier Third Edition” is the latest and largest in the series of works by the studio to create volumetric drawings in the air using hundreds of calibrated video projections.

Created by Mária Júdová and Andrej Boleslavský, ‘DUST’ explores new ways of interaction and experience of contemporary dance through the use of immersive virtual reality experience and online media.

Created by Studio Antimateria in collaboration with participating students at the workshop hosted by Presidio Temporaneo di Architettura, Shape in Scapes is an audiovisual installation that provides an abstract representation of students’ architectural projects.

Developed at the MIT Media Lab’s Mediated Matter Group, ‘Data-Driven Material Modeling’ refers specifically to the process of the creation of high-resolution, geometrically complex, and materially heterogeneous 3D printed objects at product scale.

Created by Regina Flores, Holobiont Urbanism is a research project that sets out to study, map, and visualize the microbiome of New York City, inviting participants to reimagine the city they live in as more than a vast metropolis, but rather as a complex and adaptive biological superstructure.

Designed by the Mediated Matter Group in collaboration with Stratasys and inspired by her most recent album—Vulnicura, The Rottlace is a series of masks for Björk, exploring the themes associated with self-healing and expressing ‘the face without a skin’.

Wanderers is a collaborative project between Neri Oxman + Mediated Matter Group, Christoph Bader & Dominik Kolb to create four digitally grown and 3d printed wearables.

Light Barrier by Kimchi and Chips creates phantoms of light in the air by crossing millions of calibrated beams, creating floating graphic objects which animate through space.

Curated in collaboration with the Moscow-based sound, art and technology community MIGZ, we are pleased to announce the Educational Programme for the Moscow International Festival “Circle of Lights” taking place 5th and 6th October at the Red October district.

Developed as a collaboration between Quayola & Sinigaglia, Dedalo is a collection of custom developed vvvv engines (and a toolkit) to generate, exchange and map data between a series of graphics modules and a rendering engine used for live performance.
