23/12/2015: 10 Most Memorable Projects of 2015

As 2015 winds down we look back at almost 200 extraordinary projects we’ve covered this year on CAN. And as is the case every year, picking the ten ‘best’ is hard if not impossible, as each of them has driven the conversation around the state of art and design in their own unique way. And yet, the following ten works stuck with us and, if anything, make great starting points for reflection and inspiration as we head into the new year. Until we continue our coverage in early January: happy holidays and thank you all for a great 2015!

Below Threshold

The human breath not only helps maintain life, but also carries a conversation, both in its assistance in the verbal conversation but in the chemical composition and interaction with nature. It is an ever-changing matrix with infinite components that maintains an intriguing complexity. “Below Threshold” is an installation that translates the natural landscape into a…

DIGITALIVE, an attempt to define a Contemporary Manner

The symbiosis between users and devices allows and encourages personal performance pervasively, and breaks the boundaries between human and non-human action: today’s performance is post-human, quoting Karen Barad. The concept behind the term “live” (de visu) has vastly changed, following the technological evolution and letting a high-performance gradient emerge in everyday habits. With the aim…

CAN 2017 – Highlights and Favourites

As 2017 comes to a close, we take a moment to look back at the outstanding work done this year. From spectacular peformances, large scale installations, devices and tools to the new virtual spaces for artistic exploration – so many great projects are being added to the CAN archive! Here are a just few, 25 in total, that we and you enjoyed the most this year.

22/12/2017
interference [dac] – Cross medium light wave distortions

Created by Technical Earth (Mo H. Zareei + Jim Murphy), interference [dac] is an audiovisual installation that explores the combination and interaction of waveforms in one medium with those of another. In the installation, which includes a linear array of four miniature projectors  affixed to loudspeaker cones, sound waves affect light waves while analogue elements alter digital ones.

Seaquence – Growin’ groove in a Petri dish

What if tweaking rhythm and melodic loops was like editing DNA? This is the question at the heart of Seaquence, a new iOS app by Okaynokay where you populate a Petri dish with ‘creatures’ that visually represent their sonic properties. A bold step away from conventional interface paradigms, it blends notions of tool, instrument, and game into something new and distinct.

Facets of ‘New Making’ – Tektonics at ACT Festival

Huge stroboscopic datastreams, hypnotic human-machine choreographies, a cacophony of Korean, Japanese, English, German, and French – ten weeks ago, from November 25th to 28th 2015, an unlikely cross-cultural exchange took over the all new ACT Center in Gwangju, South Korea. More than a hundred artists, designers, curators, and educators answered our invitation to add their work and voice to the inaugural edition of ACT Festival, an opening celebration for the center’s monumental facilities.

Superposition—5.84 Quintillion Facets of the Digital Sublime

This past Saturday Ryoji Ikeda presented the North American premiere of superposition to a crowd of several hundred at the Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal (MAC). As would be expected, the sixty-five minute multiscreen performance played out as kind of a data aesthetics megamix that flashed through a series of precisely choreographed abstract visual vignettes that grappled with the digital sublime and pondered the agnosticism of network culture.

Created by Ted Davis, XYscope is a library for Processing to render graphics on a vector display (oscilloscope, laser) by converting them to audio.

Interactive Architecture Lab founder Ruairi Glynn chats with CAN about the freshly-launched Design for Performance & Interaction (DfPI) programme at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.

Created by Jerobeam Fenderson and Hansi Raber, Oscilloscope Music is an audio-visual album that uses old analogue oscilloscopes for displaying hand crafted waveforms as x-y plot.

Created by TEM in collaboration with Vincent de Belleval, The Beacons is a virtual environment built around a catwalk that uses a dynamic content system piped through a room sized inverted zoetrope, created from 2.5m tall, 0.5 tonne, 60rpm motorised beacons x 3.

Created by Semiconductor (Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt), Cosmos is a two metre spherical wooden sculpture that has been formed from scientific data.

Created by Cybero, the following are Quarz Composer video renders of a Perlin Sphere GLSL shader. Originally developed by Inigo Quilez and ported to QC with added audio interactivity , two texture channels, [noise and waveform image] and audio specific calculations and rotations.

Contact is an acoustic research project that turns any hard surface into an interface. The installation uses contact microphones, passive sonar and waveform analysis to recognise information of touches, ie where a surface has been hit or how a hand has made contact.

Once we take a step back from our screens and look at exciting new opportunities Leap Motion provides, we may discover and begin to describe new ways of computer-human interaction. Here are our top 10 up-to-date.

Three things seem to surround us all the time and in great abundance: data visualization, audio visualization and mapping. The team behind TouchDesigner show you how to do all three things at once.

Created by Marcos Alonso, Samplr lets you make music and play with sound in a new and intuitive way by touching the waveform on the screen directly with your fingers.
