Spheres of Influence – Drawing lifelines of the city

Created by the SCI-Arc Faculty members Curime Batliner and Jake Newsum for the for the third annual Mextropoli Festival, Spheres of Influence is a temporary installation installed in the patio of Laboratorio Arte Alameda. Part installation and part live performance,  it uses a robotic system from Staubli to paint layers of graphics (abstracted from the city) onto a series of human-scale spheres.

Mesh Mould – Spatial robotics and designing for material interdependencies

This research project by Gramazio Kohler Research at ETH Zurich titled ‘Mesh Mould’ investigates the unification of reinforcement and formwork into a single robotically fabricated material system. Developed with the use of industrial robots, the process allows ‘spatial robotic extrusion’, creating interdependencies of mesh typology and concrete.

Valse Automatique – Symbiosis Between Humans and Technology [Processing, Rhino]

Valse Automatique is a design performance made to illustrate the symbiosis between humans and technology by translating music to form over the use of a kuka industrial robot. Invited to the project by Hermann Weizenegger – Stephan Thiel was responsible for designing the overall interface between the music by composer and violinist miki and the production process of the robot.

Dotje [Environment, Objects, NXC]

In cooperation with Christien Meindertsma, Nils Völker developed an installation for Christien’s exhibition at the MU in Eindhoven (Netherlands). The exhibition was called “Makers & Spectators” and was about the human perception and the way we look at things.

This summer, visitors to Sao Paulo’s Itau Cultural Gallery find themselves face-to-face with a host of artificial life forms. Amongst them is a new version of artist Ruairi Glynn’s interactive installation ‘Fearful Symmetry’, which was first shown at the Tate Modern, London, in 2012.

Created by Filipe Vilas-Boas and Paul Coudamy, The Punishment is an installation in which a robot executes a preventive punishment for its possible future disobedience in reference of Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics.

A project by Design I/O for TIFF Kids International Film Festival’s interactive playground digiPlaySpace, Mimic brings a UR5 robotic arm to life and imbues it with personality. Playfully craning its neck to get a better look, arcing back when it is startled – it responds to each child that enters its field of view.

Created by Alexia Léchot at ECAL, Deltu is a delta robot with a personality that interacts with humans using two iPads. Created using arm technology normally found in 3d printers, Deltu uses three different applications on the iPad Alexia built for it, using symmetry as an interpretation, a mirror and a reflexion of our own image.

Our Time is the latest large-scale installation by United Visual Artists, investigating the subjective experience of the passing of time. The installation is comprised of 21 bespoke mechanical pendulums that swing at a pace apparently unhindered by the laws of nature and where no single time measurement applies.

Created by Hansje van Halem, an independent graphic designer based in Amsterdam (NL). the following video and images are the latest in the series of experiments that explore tension between a systematic approach, legibility, and (ir)regularity in typography.

Created by Juncheng Chen, Siyuan Jing and Lydia Zhou at the Bartlett School of Architecture (Interactive Architecture Lab), this project explores possibilities in mobile structures by investigating various strategies for locomotion.

This research project by Gramazio Kohler Research at ETH Zurich titled ‘Mesh Mould’ investigates the unification of reinforcement and formwork into a single robotically fabricated material system. Developed with the use of industrial robots, the process allows ‘spatial robotic extrusion’, creating interdependencies of mesh typology and concrete.

ofxRobotArm is an openFrameworks addon for doing creative things with robot arms. The goal of the addon is to remove as many technical barriers as possible to get up and running with 6-axis robots.

Created by Danilo Sampaio and William Victor Camilleri at the The Interactive Architecture Lab at UCL/London, Hortum Machina, B is a half garden, half machine, cybernetic lifeform that explores new forms of bio-cooperative interaction between people and nature, within the built environment.

Created by Madeline Gannon, Quipt is a gesture-based control software that facilitates new ways to communicate with industrial robots.

Created by the team at FIG.- Amana Prototyping Lab in Japan, Rhythmic Gymnastics is a practical experiment using a Denso VS-050S2 robotic arm. In this experiment the aim is to represent the sensibility of human movement using harsh robot mechanics.

Rising Colorspace is a new installation by the Sonice Development duo comprised of a third ‘systemic robot’ drawing it’s rising movements as bow-like lines onto a shiny metallic wall.

Minibuilders is a research project comprised of a family of small-scale construction robots designed to perform diverse tasks, linked to the different phases of construction, finally working together as a family towards the implementation of a single structural outcome.

The process allows the creation of freeform objects without the need for molds or supporting structures. Likewise, tool can be changed, manual and multi-material injections performed, live modification and the ability to physically “undo” the print.
