Scramble Suit – Face Tracking [openFrameworks]

It all kicked off about 2 months ago when Kyle McDonald posted ‘FaceOSC’, a tool for prototyping face-based interaction. The oF wrapper Kyle created is built on non-commercial open source FaceTracker code from Jason Saragih. Kyle included an example oF app with the ofxFaceTracker addon for openFrameworks which can be downloaded here.

Call for Researchers to join Antikythera

Applications are now open for Antikythera’s Studio, which will host 15-18 international, interdisciplinary Studio Researchers from February to June 2023. The program is free and includes a housing provision and a monthly stipend of 4000 USD (or equivalent when not in Los Angeles). All travel and other associated program costs will also be covered by the program.

Pittsburgh’s Art && Code returns with a much-needed consideration of “new and independent visions for VR, MR, and AR.” Taking place from Oct 6-9th, and deliriously titled WEIRD REALITY, the four-day symposium gathers many of the best and brightest working in and at the fringes of immersive media.

Soap and Milk – Organic figments of data

Created by Waltz Binaire, Soap and Milk is designed as an interactive experience of data, allowing the observer to perceive social media as an overwhelming and organic figment. Each microscopic droplet represents a tweet and once an entity gets spawned – the viewer is invited to physically interact and explore its behaviour.

STRP Biennial: 20-29 March, Eindhoven NL

On March 20th, the doors of the Klokgebouw, Eindhoven, NL, are opened for a new edition of the STRP Biennial, one of the major art and technology events in Europe. For 10 days the four large industrial halls are filled with monumental installations, cutting edge music, spectacular performances and an international conference, for everyone interested in real virtuality.

Jeremy Rotsztain’s BECHA-KPACHA

BECHA-KPACHA is an algorithmic music video produced by Jeremy Rotsztain for the electronic musician COH. Riffing on traditional Russian folk patterns the colour-splashed animation is full of Rotsztain’s signature gestural forms and synchronized camera movements.

Earlier this year, Resonate festival was the host to Transcranial, a CAN initiated project bringing Klaus Obermaier, Daito Manabe and Kyle McDonald to Belgrade for two weeks to work on a new performance piece, creating a bridge between three festivals in Europe.

ExR3 is an a anamorphic analogue interactive installation that exists coherently in a fractured, mirrored version of a reflected room visible from four points within the real space.

Created by Lauren Lee McCarthy & Kyle McDonald, Unlearning Language is an interactive installation and performance that uses machine learning to provoke the participants to find new understandings of language, undetectable to algorithms.

Created by a Golan Levin, David Newbury, and Kyle McDonald, with the assistance of Golan’s students at CMU, Terrapattern is a visual search tool for satellite imagery that provides journalists, citizen scientists, and other researchers with the ability to quickly scan large geographical regions for specific visual features.

Taking place at the Scopitone Festival in Nantes / France on the 15th september 2015 (8:15 pm) is the latest iteration of CAN initiated Transcranial, an ambitious, collaborative performance project by Klaus Obermaier, Kyle McDonald and Daito Manabe

Created by Lauren McCarthy and Kyle McDonald, pplkpr is an app that tracks, analyzes, and auto-manages your relationships. Using a smartwatch, pplkpr monitors your physical and emotional response to the people around you, and optimizes your social life accordingly.

Created by Kyle McDonald, “Sharing Faces” uses a megapixel surveillance camera and custom software to match the face locations of the persons looking at the screen. As the person moves, new images are pulled from the database matching the new location and create a mirror-like image of yourself using the images of others.

AIT (“Social Hacking”), taught for the first time this semester by Lauren McCarthy and Kyle McDonald at NYU’s ITP, explored the structures and systems of social interactions, identity, and self representation as mediated by technology.

Light Leaks is a light installation by Kyle McDonald and Jonas Jongejan comprised of fifty mirror balls projecting controlled light in the room.

It all kicked off about 2 months ago when Kyle McDonald posted ‘FaceOSC’, a tool for prototyping face-based interaction. The oF wrapper Kyle created is built on non-commercial open source FaceTracker code from Jason Saragih. Kyle included an example oF app with the ofxFaceTracker addon for openFrameworks which can be downloaded here.

Kyle McDonald has just posted on oF forums a video of  an alternative way of rendering point clouds, using DOF to help give a more photographic feel and actually use the 3D information in 2D renders.

In today’s mercurial, complex, and ambiguous world, our bodies oscillate between the virtual and the real more than ever. The world-famous collective Rhizomatiks is testing the web, presenting performances and experimental online-based systems, and approaching these situations from a variety of angles.

Review of the exhibition last month at the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, South Korea – a collection of 12 works questioning the essential meaning and significance of the data world.

Starting today (27. April – 3. May 2015), the international NODE – Forum for Digital Arts in Frankfurt assembles international participants and speakers in the areas of design, art, culture and science, who newly define borders of design and programming.

The Augmented Hand Series is a real-time interactive software system that presents playful, dreamlike, and uncanny transformations of its visitors’ hands.

BECHA-KPACHA is an algorithmic music video produced by Jeremy Rotsztain for the electronic musician COH. Riffing on traditional Russian folk patterns the colour-splashed animation is full of Rotsztain’s signature gestural forms and synchronized camera movements.

Recent Royal College of Art (RCA) design graduate David Hedberg’s Smile TV turns the medium’s engagement pattern on its head: instead of making you smile at on-screen silliness, you have to “smile to watch”.
