Vaccine Protocol
The University of Maryland has made the safety of our students, faculty and staff, and our surrounding communities a top priority. As part of that commitment, the University System of Maryland (USM) recently announced that students, faculty, and staff on USM campuses this fall, including UMD, are required to be vaccinated against COVID. As a prospective and/or a new employee at UMD, you will be required to comply with the University’s vaccination protocol. Prospective or new employees may seek a medical or religious exemption to the vaccination requirement at return.umd.edu and must have an approved exemption prior to the start of their employment. Failure to provide proof of vaccination or to obtain approval for a medical or religious exemption will result in the offer of employment being rescinded.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Department of Art at the University of Maryland invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position in Immersive Media Design, beginning in August 2022. We seek candidates who embrace hybridity in an expanding field of theory and practice and who are actively engaged in investigations of technologies that augment and influence contemporary artmaking practices. These areas may include but are not limited to: immersive media, AR/VR, new media installation, artificial intelligence, digital narratives, and game-design in an arts context

We are at the foundational stages of several forward-looking collaborative initiatives within the University of Maryland community: We are an educational partner in the recently developed Immersive Media Design major, a cross-disciplinary two-track major jointly offered by both the Departments of Art and Computer Science. This new major emphasizes learning through collaborative creative experiences which bridge the arts and STEM fields through sustained programmatic collaboration between each cohort. Additionally, we are a partner in the recently announced campus-wide ‘Arts for All’ initiative which seeks to increase the vibrancy of the arts on campus through programming and collaboration which emphasizes art, technology, and social justice. The successful candidate should be able to provide direction in the trajectory of this new major as well as teach courses within its curriculum, and should have the potential to provide guidance within the Arts for All framework. The candidate’s creative practice should reflect the ability to work within an interdisciplinary department as well as work collaboratively in a broad context involving multiple fields of study. In addition to maintaining an active and visible practice of scholarly or creative research, additional responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses; mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Art and Immersive Media Design; engaging in service at the department, college and university level, and advising in the development of undergraduate curriculum and facilities enhancement within the Department of Art.

The University of Maryland is an equal opportunity employer. The Department of Art is committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community. Candidates who have experience working with a diverse range of faculty, staff and students, and who can contribute to the climate of inclusivity, are encouraged to identify their experiences in these areas. Minorities and women who explore themes of identity, social categorizations, intersectionality, race, class, gender, and sexual orientation are encouraged to apply. This search is contingent upon the continued availability of funds.
