Crystallisation of Thought – a Tribute to the endurance behind an innovation

Created by a collective artist Living Spirits from Bangkok, Thailand. Crystallisation of Thought is the latest installation exhibited in i Light Singapore 2019 (the bicentennial edition) to visualise the beauty of the thinking process behind an innovation with interactive light show and game.

Crystallisation of Thought is an Interactive Light installation that visually imagines how ideas are generated and then combined into congruent thoughts, in the form of interconnected waves of small crystals to symbolize the crystallization of thinking process and formation of new possibilities that come in streams much like the Singapore River that is the center where creativity meets opportunity throughout the past 200 years.

The light show abstractly tells the story of the thinking process behind innovation that is not less important than the outcome. It has been brainstormed, researched, developed and tested over and over until the complication of ideas become crystallised and have been used. Living Spirits wants to visualise the beauty behind the success of innovation with 4 acts of motion light show to display the iterative process of thought.

Living Spirits wants to visualise the beauty behind the success of innovation with 4 acts of motion light show to display the iterative process of thought.

Act 1: Brainstorm: Brainstorming to gather ideas to be crystallised.
Act 2: Research: Research for the possibilities.
Act 3: Crystallise: Crystallising the thought that can be used.
Act 4: Shining: the crystallised idea become real as if it comes to light.

The crystals are the symbol of the crystalised thoughts meanwhile the hanging depicted the shape of the wave.  It was made of more than 800 light bulbs covered with folded translucent and light-weighted masking material controlled by the modular interactive lighting system.

A customized application was made to bring the story and interaction to life. Each crystal light represents a pixel on the computer screen that displays any color after being addressed and named. The color parameter will be transmitted in DMX signal to each crystal then the whole crystals display the light show content accordingly.

Visitors can enjoy different ways to experience this installation. One way is to go to the website and pick a color then see the light move on the crystal wave. Another way, visitors can also play the game with friends or other visitors.

The classic game ‘Pong’ was selected to be featured on this installation. Bouncing the ball is like the word bouncing idea to carry the idea and keep it ongoing as a part of crystallisation process.

The D-Pad or directional pad were used to be the game controller. After visitors hit the start button, the player can move the bar to bounce the ball from left to right. The winner has to win over another player for 3 rounds or get the Best of 5. After the end of the game or leave it idle for 15 seconds, the program will switch back to the light show mode automatically.
