Spheres of Influence – Drawing lifelines of the city

Created by the SCI-Arc Faculty members Curime Batliner and Jake Newsum for the for the third annual Mextropoli Festival, Spheres of Influence is a temporary installation installed in the patio of Laboratorio Arte Alameda. Part installation and part live performance,  it uses a robotic system from Staubli to paint layers of graphics (abstracted from the city) onto a series of human-scale spheres.

“Very much how our cell phones change the way we navigate and entertain ourselves in the public space, the robot, a device with high attention value, influenced and changed the way people navigated public space. Some people stopped in amazement, curiosity, skepticism, or to ask questions; while others did not bother at all but had to move around the people already standing there.” –– Batliner

CAN 2018 – Highlights and Favourites

As 2018 comes to a close, we take a moment to look back at the outstanding work done this year. Stewart – A mutually trustful interface for a fully autonomous car

Created by Felix Ros, Stewart is a hypothetical tactile interface designed for a fully autonomous car with objective to accommodate a healthy relation between man and machine.

CONSTI2GO – Print copies of the US Constitution on the press of a button

Created by Thibault Brevet, CONSTI2GO is a portable device that allows, on the press of a button, to print copies of the US Constitution by hijacking the existing network of standard receipt printers.

Anachronic Landscapes – Automation and coevolution in nature

Created by the SCI-Arc faculty Curime Batliner and Jake Newsum in collaboration with Paralelo Architectos, Anachronic Landscapes is a robotic system that lives inside of an abandoned industrial structure overgrown by nature. The system executes its daily routine, nurturing the plants with water and fertilising it with fluorescent fluids. While the machine keeps the plants alive it simultaneously ignites a process of transformation forcing the plants to adapt to the new condition.
