Created by Mike Hogan, Karen Hogan and Orkan Telhan, ‘Microbial Design Studio’ is a countertop biofabrication machine that brings together the capabilities of a biology wetlab into a single inexpensive piece of hardware to design, culture, and test genetically modified organisms.
26/05/2017Make, hack, design, and code with the easiest-to-use Arduino device on the market, the Touch Board by UK based Bare Conductive is now available in the CAN shop.
25/05/2017Created by the ECAL’s Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students at ÉCAL, and led by Niklas Roy, Bouquet is a synaesthetic olfactory device which allows the user to perceive color through fragrances.
10/05/2017Created by St. Petersburg artist collective VOLNA, Powerline is an audio reactive installation comprised of 220 meters of electroluminescent wire driven by 15 meter “voltaic arc” filling the space with electric buzz and sparks.
08/05/2017Entropic System is a drawing machine that inscribes ornate geometric patterns into a bed of ‘black beauty’ sand. Made by the Denver-based media artist Laleh Mehran the device has instability built-in to it, and creates a feedback loop where approaching it affects its output.
11/04/2017At the Digital Media study program in University of/the Arts Bremen, computer science meets design, while engineering and natural sciences interconnect with the arts. We present you four recent “semester” projects exploring topics ranging from VR, popular media to digital nature.
03/04/2017Artefact#0, Digital Necrophony is a recent installation by Lille-based artist Mathilde Lavenne that forgoes (burial and cremation) funerary convention in favour of sonification.
14/02/2017Created by digital design studio NEOANALOG , “Particle Flow” is a physical installation comprised of granules driven by gravity and topography forming an analogue particle system. A moving slanted plane and a grid of motorized stamps control the elements to form infinite variations of behaviours and patterns.
14/02/2017Low cost and open source, Rob Seward’s Z1FFER is Hardware Random Number Generator that harnesses thermal noise to provide a high quality random bitstream for research and experimentation. Available at the CAN shop now!
24/01/2017Created by Henning Marxen, Crossvision is a series of video art sequences of recognisable yet disorienting sceneries that combine the popular slit-scan capturing technique with a specially designed camera slider.
11/01/2017A complete redesign of his 2014 Jean Tinguely-inspired project, David Colombini’s Attachment is a “poetic machine” that renders physical manifestations of user-generated digital messages (text, images, or videos) and sends them off via biodegradable balloons.
04/01/2017Created by Jelle Reith, Compass is a wearable suit designed out of three pieces with each including movable flaps that work together and ‘point’ north.
03/01/2017Created by Yuichiro Katsumoto, Mojigen and Sujigen is a collection of servo motors, connected together to write a letter by the means of manipulating the axis of the motor.
14/12/2016Polyloge #1 is an interactive installation and a hyper-local message feed. Through an open WIFI network, users in reach of the wireless signal can send text messages with their smartphones, tablets or computers. These messages get printed immediately on a paper roll that runs in-between two translucent, black boxes and are transformed into a material stream.
04/11/2016Created and Directed by Anita Fontaine and Geoffrey Lillemon with W+K Amsterdam, Bitmap Banshees is a VR experience set inside a dystopian Amsterdam, where a gang of biker banshees have taken over the city and are out to get you.
28/10/2016Created by Riccardo Lardi, The Reality Gap is a research project that investigates how robot movements evoke empathy towards humans and speculates where will the next generation of robotic systems come from and where will they go.
10/08/2016Created by Luiz Zanotello, The Aerographer is an installation that explores the state of uncertainty in times of ubiquitous technological mediation, borders among territories and boundaries among bodies.
19/07/2016Continuing his exploration of personal objects in the age of information overload, Manual Reader and Memory Device are two new devices by Ishac Bertran that address perception, personal data collection and memory.
06/07/2016Created by Ann-Katrin Krenz, Parasitic / Symbiotic project explores the artificiality of nature, and whether a moderate and thoughtful technical interventions in nature can create something aesthetically valuable and permanent.
10/05/2016Created by Jasna Dimitrovska as a part of her Digital Media – HfK Bremen, Master Theses, Three Machines on Transparency is comprised of three machines that by own demonstration allow the artist to synthesise philosophical concepts of different forms+ideas of transparency into the corporeality.
26/04/2016Created by João Costa, Adeus is a sound installation that explores concepts arising from the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, where the perfectly designed musical system eventually falls out of sync, mirroring the flaws and entropy inherent to human nature.
22/04/2016Created by Danilo Sampaio and William Victor Camilleri at the The Interactive Architecture Lab at UCL/London, Hortum Machina, B is a half garden, half machine, cybernetic lifeform that explores new forms of bio-cooperative interaction between people and nature, within the built environment.
18/04/2016Created by Saurabh Datta (automato), Poetic Router is a project that investigates the potential of the everyday manufactured IoT platforms beyond what is commonly discussed. Whereas most concerns of IoT are focused on security since every “Chip-‘ed” device is hackable and can be jacked and modded remotely. Poetic Router explores network transmission as a way to generate poetry by scraping the data found on the server links.
11/04/2016Currently on show at Berlin’s NOME Gallery is the latest work by Nils Völker titled Bits And Pieces. The installation consists out of 108 mass-produced toy spheres hanging in the middle of the exhibition space, individually addressable and controlled, to create organic waves that appear to move throughout the space.
06/04/2016Designed by Robin Baumgarten, Line Wobbler is a one-dimensional arcade game that emerges from the combination of a unique ‘wobble’ controller and an LED strip.
23/03/2016Developed by the team at MIT Media Lab’s Responsive Environments group, SensorTape is a sensor network in a form factor of a tape that allows users to create large sensor networks.
24/02/2016Created by Félix Luque Sánchez and Iñigo Bilbao, Memory Lane is a sculptural representation and investigation into memory and space by questioning human capacity of generating fiction, either by means of a simple child’s game or of a complex technological process.
21/01/2016Created by Luiz Zanotello at the University of the Arts, Bremen, The New Velocity is a machine designed to plot the phantom Sandy Island using digital as a new analogy for its existence. The project investigates a charting error that persisted in cartographic maps even after the advent of digital media. It speculates how data and physical phenomena are entangled, and how in contemporaneity, the two have the same weight under digital media.
22/12/2015Developed at the MIT Media Lab’s Fluid Interfaces Group, Reality Editor allows users to merge digital and physical realities into a unified experience.
08/12/2015Created by Felix Ros, Stewart is a hypothetical tactile interface designed for a fully autonomous car with objective to accommodate a healthy relation between man and machine.
