Ghostwriter is a project that invites us to mindfully co-create with the AI through a vintage typewriter’s tactile and physical form. Imagined as a calm meditative interface it removes all the digital distractions and takes us on an emotional journey through paper and ink.
16/12/2022Imagined as a tool to provide assistance to a conventional approach to sculpting, here an AI model is developed to seek out strategies that provide a constant improvement to how a given form is achieved. By feeding it with different tools, rules and rewards through reinforcement learning, the team steer the process revealing unpredictable outcomes.
12/12/2022Created by Jamy Herrmann at ECAL, MEMOGRAM is a (non)camera that prints our images in the form of a written description, inviting users to (re)discover those moments in images.
11/10/2022“Rejected By My Own Robot” is a disobedient kissing robot which is activated when the user approaches. The mechanical lips will extend towards the user as they inch closer. But the kiss will never be consummated: move too quickly or get too close and the lips will quickly retract, ultimately rejecting the user every time.…
21/02/2022Altar-3000′ is a project and a device that explores the notion of an AI prophet, a automated totem of customised belief. The home altar connects to the internet to retrieve latest betting headlines from PredictIt, humanity’s financial positions on the near future IRL.
26/01/2022‘Floating Codes’ is a site-specific light and sound installation that explores the inner workings and hidden aesthetics of artificial neural networks – the fundamental building blocks of machine learning systems or artificial intelligence. The exhibition space itself becomes a neural network that processes information, its constantly alternating environment (light conditions/day-night cycle) including the presence of the visitors.
05/01/2022The Lost Passage is an interactive experience for the web that creates a new digital home for an extinct species called passenger pigeon. It’s a digitally crafted world of a swarm of artificial pigeons, which seem to be inhabiting a sublime yet destitute memory of a lost landscape.
25/11/2021Created by media artist and creative director Dalena Tran, Incomplete is an algorithmically visualized music video for UK musician Ash Koosha’s track from his 2018 album Aktual.
14/06/2021Created by Artem Stepanchuk, ‘The Transcriptions of Space’ is an experimental application (PWA) developed using deep learning algorithms that demonstrates the ability of artificial intelligence to realize the inherent human creativity.
20/01/2021In November 2019, CAN joined the biannual ECAL Research Day to find out how methodologies borrowed from science and engineering can strengthen creative practice—and drive the conversation.
14/02/2020Created by Yuri Sizuki (Pentagram) in collaboration with Fish Fabrications and Counterpoint, ‘The Welcome Chorus’ is an interactive installation that brings together sound, sculpture and artificial intelligence.
29/01/2020Created by Nicolas Boillot, ‘Vectoglyph’ is a project exploring both the behaviour and implications of GPT-2 AI, a text generating model developed by OpenAI that is able to generate coherent texts in English on demand (including “fake news”).
19/08/2019From the inventions of computing pioneer Douglas Engelbart to the philosophies of Andy Clark and David Chalmers: curator Philo van Kemenade reveals what inspired the 2019 edition of Bratislava’s Sensorium Festival (June 7-9)
07/05/2019Yuri Suzuki and Pentagram in collaboration with Counterpoint have re-imagined the Electronium – Raymond Scott’s instantaneous performance-composition machine.

30/01/2019Created by Michael Sedbon, Alt-C is an installation that uses electricity produced by plants to power a single board computer mining a cryptocurrency. The project questions our relationship to ecosystems in regards to networked technologies and abstraction problematics.
09/01/2019Created by Marta Revuelta, AI Facial Profiling, Levels of Paranoia is a project exploring the potential and implication of AI technologies by proposing a machine that recognises the ability of an individual to handle firearms and predicts their potential to cause harm from a biometric analysis of their face.
29/11/2018Created by Waltz Binaire, Narciss is a robot that uses artificial intelligence to analyse itself, thus reflecting on its own existence. Comprised of Google’s Tensorflow framework and a simple mirror, the experiment translates self-portraits of a digital body into lyrical guesses.
25/06/2018Artificial Imagination was a symposium organized by Ottawa’s Artengine this past winter that invited a group of artists to discuss the state of AI in the arts and culture. CAN was on hand to take in the proceedings, and given the emergence of documentation, we share videos and a brief report.
01/05/2018Created by Yuri Suzuki Design Studio and presented at the recent Milan Design Week, Sonic Pendulum is a sound installation in which articial intelligence imagines and materialises an endless soundscape.
24/04/2017Created by Dries Depoorter in collaboration with Max Pinckers, Trophy Camera is a photo camera that can only make award winning pictures. Just take your photo and check if the camera sees your picture as award winning.
19/04/2017Created by Sebastian Schmieg, ‘Decision Space’ explores how new datasets can enable new experiments in teaching computers how to understand images within a set of meaningful and complex categories.
27/01/2017Earlier this year SFPC in NYC was the host to alt-AI, a conference organised by Lauren Gardner and Gene Kogan to highlight and question artificial intelligence through the lens of artistic practice.
19/09/2016RIOT by Leonard Mechiari is a game designed as a riot simulator to tell the story of conflict and social unrest, soon available for PC, Mac, iOS, Android and OUYA.
21/03/2014Created by the Weimar based collective weAREmedienkuenstler, Rock Paper Scissors is a game played between two computers. Like in the classic game, each computer has its own random algorithm running, choosing one of the three possible items. Connected by an ethernet cable, each computer plays its hand — the winning pc gets a point.
