Serena Cangiano reviews “Perfect Behaviours – life redesigned by the algorithm” curated by Giorgio Olivero and on show in Turin, Italy’s OGR Officine Grandi Riparazioni.
16/05/2023“Evolution” is an immersive audio-visual installation and performance that celebrates the vitality of inorganic materials. The project takes its inspiration from the physics phenomenon of Cymatics, which has demonstrated that certain substances can autonomously form complex patterns in response to vibrations.
14/03/2023Imagined as a tool to provide assistance to a conventional approach to sculpting, here an AI model is developed to seek out strategies that provide a constant improvement to how a given form is achieved. By feeding it with different tools, rules and rewards through reinforcement learning, the team steer the process revealing unpredictable outcomes.
12/12/2022Created by Kachi Chan, ‘Sisyphus’ is an installation featuring two robots engaged in endless cyclic interaction. Smaller robots build brick arches, whilst a giant robot pushes them down – propelling a narrative of construction and deconstruction.
20/06/2022Created by Madeline Gannon for the 2018 Annual Meeting of New Champions at the The World Economic Forum, in Tianjin, China, Manus is a set of ten industrial robots that are programmed to behave like a pack of animals.
08/11/2018Created by Ralf Baecker, Putting The Pieces Back Together Again is an artistic investigation and meditation about complex systems and scientific methodology. Consisting of 1250 stepper motors arranged in a two dimensional grid, each motor in the installation moves in a random direction, sometimes intersecting and reversing direction, producing emergent constellations and behaviours.
02/11/2018Created by Piet Schmidt during the summer semester at UdK Berlin (New Media / Digital Class), Encounter is a a robotic arm with a mirror that curiously observes its surroundings.
17/09/2018Created at the Köln International School of Design and supervised by Prof. Andreas Muxel, Feedback Machines is a short student project that explores the concept of feedback loops, as an attempt to introduce students to physical computing as well as provide a perspective on the complex topic through experimental explorations.
16/11/2016Created by Steffen Hartwig, On the Secret Life of Things is a series of experimental prototypes that explore the new and ubiquitous things of daily life. Using familiar objects, the objects are repurposed, limited to their original function/behaviour but re-imagined for the age of information.
13/09/2016Created by Juncheng Chen, Siyuan Jing and Lydia Zhou at the Bartlett School of Architecture (Interactive Architecture Lab), this project explores possibilities in mobile structures by investigating various strategies for locomotion.
16/08/2016Created by Riccardo Lardi, The Reality Gap is a research project that investigates how robot movements evoke empathy towards humans and speculates where will the next generation of robotic systems come from and where will they go.
10/08/2016Exploring behavior based design systems that are self-aware, mobile, and self-structure / assemble. The following is the work AADRL Spyropoulos Design Lab at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, in London.
01/08/2016Created by Eun Young Park, LINKKI is a kinetic construction toy based on planar linkage mechanism which allows users to design and prototype kinetic movements.
26/10/2015Created by Romain Cazier at ECAL, Rec All is an interpretation of the geometrical style puzzle games, widely popular on mobile. Taking some of this genre’s features, Romain designed a singular universe, where strange creatures with a cyclic behaviour are generated from a simple gesture.
23/09/2015Conditional_Lover is a bot that unlike its counterparts that live hidden in servers, has a physical appearance with a task to automate your Tinder using its “eyes” and “fingers”. It does this by analysing photos on your phone (webcam) and then selects or rejects it (prongs) based on an algorithm that combines your preferred age, golden ratio, smile, glasses, ethnicity etc.
10/08/2015Created by London based experimental architecture and design studio Minimaforms, this project is speculative life-like robotic environment that raises questions of how future environments could actively enable new forms of communication with the everyday.
10/10/2013Constellaction is an installation by panGenerator which included swarm like intelligent and light responsive tetrahedrons that evolved and branched thanks to the collaborative effort of the audience.
09/10/2013Currently on show at the ACME. gallery in Los Angeles is a piece by John Carpenter titled trailers_anemone, an interactive installation that explores fluid, undulating trails of light through time and space.
