Bright Matter: Afterglow – Joanie Lemercier on light, craft, and the sublime

The Object of the Internet is a kinetic installation by Montréal-based artist duo Project EVA. Prepared for “The Dead Web” exhibition at Eastern Bloc, the apparatus invites viewers to put their heads inside an elaborate spinning apparatus that reflects and blurs their likeness and identity.

Created by Alexia Léchot at ECAL, Deltu is a delta robot with a personality that interacts with humans using two iPads. Created using arm technology normally found in 3d printers, Deltu uses three different applications on the iPad Alexia built for it, using symmetry as an interpretation, a mirror and a reflexion of our own image.

Latest in the series of mesmerising installations by ART+COM is À la recherche, a site specific installation that covers the surrounding walls of a newly refurbished legendary Les Bains nightclub in scattered points of reflected light.

Created by Kyle McDonald, “Sharing Faces” uses a megapixel surveillance camera and custom software to match the face locations of the persons looking at the screen. As the person moves, new images are pulled from the database matching the new location and create a mirror-like image of yourself using the images of others.

Light Barrier by Kimchi and Chips creates phantoms of light in the air by crossing millions of calibrated beams, creating floating graphic objects which animate through space.

Created by Ralf Baecker and produced by the LEAP gallery in Berlin, Mirage is an installation that uses muscle wires to move a mirror that reflects a laser beam into a shape of a landscape.

Created by Shohei Fujimoto, Power of One #Point is an installation exploring input and output using laser and reflecting mirrors.

‘MirrorFugue’ by Xiao Xiao at the MIT Media Lab explores music collaboration across space and time using a set of interfaces for piano to visualise gesture of a performance.

In this tutorial we will show you how to create an application using Cinder that grabs photos from Instagram to create real-time animated kaleidoscopes. We’ll look at the technical details of the (simplified) version that is now included as a sample with Cinder (0.8.5+).

“Portrait” is work in progress on a video installations that shows portraits as “paintings in motion” — grotesque, dream-like, abstract and surreal photographs of real people created using various editing and compositing techniques.

ExR3 is an a anamorphic analogue interactive installation that exists coherently in a fractured, mirrored version of a reflected room visible from four points within the real space.
