As per tradition each year, December is when we look back at the amazing work published on CAN. From ingenious machines and installations to mesmerising experiences that leverage new mediums for artistic inquiry – we added scores of projects to CAN’s archive in 2019. Here are some highlights.

Interactive Architectural Projection Mapping – Call for Proposals

Quartier des spectacles has posted a call for innovative interactive projection mapping projects and their ponying up up to $10,000 (CAD) funding, expert tutelage to support selected projects’ development, and the opportunity to present finished works near the bustling Saint-Laurent metro station.

It was just three weeks ago we were in Montréal for the 4th edition of MUTEK_IMG, MUTEK’s forum on digital creation. Invited to contribute to its symposium, we curated five panels. In this post-festival report, we share some highlights.

On April 11–13th MUTEK Montréal presents the 4th edition of MUTEK_IMG, their offshoot festival focused on digital creation. CAN/HOLO was invited to curate five panels within this year’s program, that bring together leading artists and thinkers to consider pressing aesthetic and sociopolitical questions.

Quartier des spectacles has posted a call for innovative interactive projection mapping projects and their ponying up up to $10,000 (CAD) funding, expert tutelage to support selected projects’ development, and the opportunity to present finished works near the bustling Saint-Laurent metro station.

“Three Pieces with Titles” is the latest audiovisual performance by Montreal’s artificiel. In it Alexandre Burton and Julien Roy manipulate an eclectic collection of objects within the field of view of a computer vision system to generate real-time video and abstract sonic collage.

The CAN/HOLO team is headed to Montréal for the 18th edition of MUTEK. A celebration of the best and brightest in audiovisual performance, we’ll be hosting ‘HOLO Encounters’ with several of the festival’s featured artists.

Berlin-based Canadian artist Darsha Hewitt engages in an extended conversation with CAN about her new online video tutorial series dedicated to the Wurlitzer Side Man—the world’s oldest drum machine.

Created by Copenhagen-based artist and researcher Tobias Ebsen, Poème Mécanique is an electromechanical sound sculpture produced for Espace culturel Georges-Émile-Lapalme, a public walkway connecting the Place-des-Arts metro and Complexe Desjardins in Montréal.

Taking place in Montréal on Oct 1st-3rd, the second edition of MUTEK_IMG takes a deep dive into the creative possibilities of VR and immersive media.
