Music coming from earthworms—that strange idea gave birth to MIMIZU. Over the course of seven years, qubibi (Kazumasa Teshigahara) has cultivated not just algorithms, but undulating forms imbued with a mysterious sense of movement. The expressions spun by organic algorithms, floating between control and freedom, transcend the inorganic, calculated image of computer art and instead evoke a richness reminiscent of life itself.
The MIMIZU series, which began with video works in 2018 and expanded to still images, reached its conclusion with the exhibition “Last Tango” at the New York gallery Nguyen Wahed. Evolving from his signature work “hello world,” these works depict meticulous expressions woven together with intricately intertwined lines.
Each work has its own unique line structure, and is created using a technique the artist calls “digital stitching,” in which multiple layers are woven together. The enchanting landscapes that appear when MIMIZU is cross-sectioned express the unique worlds they contain, like ancient nature or a star-studded night sky.
This weighty 600-page book documents the trajectory of this rare practice. Featuring a limited edition of 90 hand-bound copies, four different cover designs (three of which feature previously unpublished work), a custom red sleeve, and original commentary by Mimi Nguyen and Casey Reas, all beautifully bound to the work’s unique worldview.
This is the culmination of MIMIZU, a crystallization of visual expression born from code. This is a supreme collection of works that both documents seven years of creative work and allows you to savor the beautiful binding that only a limited edition can offer.
