BHonam Kim is an artist who makes devices, focused on creating one context between music and materiality. So much as the dream of Kim’s childhood is an instrument maker not as a musician, Kim is interested in making interfaces. Communicating with various people through devices, searching for new ways in it is the primary point in Kim’s artworks. Consequently, Kim collects and expresses the residue memory of people through destructing and reconstructing various kinds of devices. Expanding through collaborations, Kim’s devices as one of the interfaces become instruments of performance or optical devices connecting images and sound. In this process, Kim’s devices bring expressions of devices which are material and technological mediums of interfaces to the light. Expression of technological mediums reveals the material and technological natures which concealed in the black box. In this way, by placing artworks that are hidden in black boxes in this age of technological society outside in the space, Kim would like to bring realizing “how to operate” and “how to make” in it to appreciation in itself. Honam Kim explores ways of making contexts of mediums by building a device. Through the process of deconstructing and reinventing devices of various mediums/media, he expresses and collects the memories left in devices. His device is expanded in collaborations as an interface. It can be an instrument in sound performance or an optical device that connects images and sounds and so on.
