  • Echo Chamber System for Submarine Cable began with thinking of the physical submarine optical cables that transmit light signals, when we experience the slight delay by clicking on the internet. The 10 displays in this space exchange signals with servers in various cities in the world. When transmitting signal return to display, the video plays in order. In this process, the light traveling across the world generates little time delay due to the speed of light’s limitations and the length of the cables, therefore, playing back sounds became echo in this space.

This artwork uses slight delays in the internet environment to make audiences sense the existence of submarine optical cables transmitting light signals under that as echo. Therefore, it leads reflexion the internet environment that we believe simultaneous, in fact, is composed of small non-simultaneous moments.

11 Channel Televisions , 10 Raspberry Pi, 10 Web Servers located in 10 cities, numerous internet cables between the exhibition hall and the web server, variable dimensions, 8 min, Seoul.

Some of the voices in the video played on the display (Part 1/3):

I am sitting in a different room connected the internet cable from the one you are in now.
I am playing the videos recorded my speaking voice on several displays in this room again and again.

The back of each display devices has little computer, it goes and returns signals to the server located many cities around the world. One light in front of you goes to one city and come back, a video play on one display device. A video played, and then it sends a light to another city, and it comes back, then another video play, on another display device. This process repeats the number of display devices in this room.

In this way, one light moving around the world generates distance of time as length of cables because of limit of speed of light as luminous flux, and videos playing on each display device have minute time difference of arrival. Therefore, the voice heard to you is the resonance of Internet environment that we believe as simultaneity. Also, the seeing of you is the blur of the simultaneity that it could not exist. Repeated my voice is feel as like interrupting my voice. Before I know it, I’ll become to stutter in this space.

Through this small activity, I would not like to talk grand narrative that the simultaneity as concept does not exist in reality. Rather, I would like to talk sense appearing the moment unachievable, or that to fail the concept. It is truth that this too alluring moment is the sense that makes thing which could not think because of non-language to think.
