A little history about RSS
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) has been around since the late ’90s, offering a straightforward way to deliver updated web content directly to readers. Before social media algorithms and notification fatigue, RSS was the go-to tool for staying informed. It was all great until Google decided to kill the most popular RSS reader on the planet (Google Reader) in favour of controling aceess to news through their search. However, It remains the most powerful alternative for accessing content on your own terms––ad-free, curated, and always current.
Why is RSS still great
RSS readers act like personal inboxes for your favorite websites, letting you browse articles, images, and videos without ever leaving the app. They give you control over what you see and when you see it, making them an excellent way to keep track of multiple sites, including CAN.
Popular RSS readers
For Mac/iOS there is NetNewsWire (free, lightweight, and open source) and if you are Windows/Linux then RSSOwl. If you prefer web apps that also have dedicated iOS/Android apps then try Feedly or Reeder. There are also a whole lot of other self-hosted options out there to choose from like FreshRSS.
