  • As a part of GML Week all this week where F.A.T Lab will be publishing new GML related projects each day, Evan Roth has just released Graffiti Analysis 2.0 software for Mac, Windows + Linux (soon now available) together with DustTag, graffiti drawing application for the iPhone.

Graffiti Analysis is an extensive ongoing study into the motion of graffiti. Custom software designed for graffiti writers creates visualizations of the often unseen motion involved in the creation of a tag. Motion data is recorded, analyzed and archived in a free and open database, 000000book.com, where writers can share analytical representations of their hand styles. Influential graffiti artist such as SEEN, TWIST, AMAZE, KETONE, JONONE, and KATSU have had their tags motion captured using the Graffiti Analysis software.

The desktop software is currently available for Mac OSX only and you can get it here (separate downloads for playback and capture applications, Mac, Windows + Linux)

DustTag is an iPhone application designed for graffiti writers that visualizes the motion involved in the creation of a tag. Motion data is recorded, analyzed and archived in a free and open database, 000000book.com, where writers can share 3-D animated representations of their hand styles. All tags created in DustTag are saved as Graffiti Markup Language (GML) files, a new digital standard we wrote about earlier used by other popular graffiti applications such as Laser Tag and EyeWriter. DustTag is fully compatible with the Graffiti Analysis 2.0 software suite, which is available online for free on the DOWNLOADS page and can be used to playback DustTag creations from the iPhone on OSX.

    Features:
    * Line thickness based on speed.
    * Tags rendered in 3-D based on time.
    * Rotating the phone rotates the tag in 3-D.
    * Multi-touch functionality for navigating 3-D environment.
    * All tags can be uploaded to
    000000book.com for free download.
    * All DustTags can be played back in OSX, Windows and Linux desktop systems.
    * Ability to tag graffiti data with keywords.
    * Single line as well as multi-line drawing modes.
    * Full screen animated 3-D playback of graffiti tag sequences.

DustTag source is also available for download if you wish to explore the ins and outs of the iPhone application. You will need the “pre release v0.06” version of openFrameworks to compile which you can download here (+ Apple’s iPhone SDK). Of course if you want to deploy to iPhone you will need to be registered as an iPhone developer too.

Graffiti Analysis is a project by Evan Roth. All of the software changes in GA2.0 were written by Mzz Chris Sugrue, with support from the Fondation CartierGA1.0 was created at Parsons Art Media & Technology with input and advising from Zach Lieberman.

DustTag iPhone app was created by Evan Roth with artist Chris Sugrue.

Graffiti Analysis and DustTag were both built using OpenFrameworks.

    Platform: iPhone
    Version: 1.0
    Cost: $1.99
