Civic Creative Base Tokyo [CCBT] , a hub where the public can explore their creative imaginations in society through the use of digital technology, announces exhibitions of new works by CCBT 2022 artist fellows in Tokyo.
Beginning with the exciting new work by Tokolo Asao, Hiramoto Tomoki, and Iguchi Kota (all contributors to the much-discussed drone display at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games), exhibitions of projects by CCBT’s artist fellows will include Tomo Kihara and Playfool’s original game co-created by humans and artificial intelligence, and an augmented reality event held in the streets of Shibuya. The collective SIDE CORE will also present a new work in its video series about urban change.
About CCBT Art Incubation Program
One of CCBT’s core programs and the largest artist fellowship in Japan, the Art Incubation Program aims to enable new artistic creativity and R&D that inspires the world with what Tokyo can do. CCBT’s artist fellows receive funding support for new projects, use of CCBT’s facilities, and expert advice as they develop their work and then present it in Tokyo. Alongside this, fellows give workshops and lectures at CCBT, share their creative process publicly, and serve as partners helping to build CCBT.

Tomo Kihara + Playfool
AI-generated images and text have recently attracted a lot of attention due to their increasing quality and growing resemblance to human-made creations. Expanding on Alan Turing’s Imitation Game (1950), this project utilises AI not to imitate humanity’s past expressions but rather to encourage humans to deviate from it. In the exhibition, visitors can experience this co-evolution between human and computer through a collaborative game in which players must draw prompts in an unusual way so that other humans can guess what it is, but the AI can’t. In addition, data accumulated over numerous workshops throughout the exhibition is reflected in various forms. Through the competitive and co-creative interplay between AI and humans, the project aims to investigate the future of creative expression.

An augmented reality exhibition in the streets of Shibuya featuring eight Japanese and international artists
“Augmented Situation D” is an interactive exhibition in which visitors enjoy works on display at CCBT and the streets of Shibuya through their phones. When visitors use their phone to read the AR marker on the works at the venue and at locations around the city, art appears that fuses the real and the virtual.
The exhibition explores the theme of festivals. Utilizing AR technology to conjure up a festive spirit in the urban space of Shibuya, the project pioneers a new kind of art festival held in the city as well as fresh possibilities for artistic expression through extended reality.

SIDE CORE
The highly anticipated latest entry in this series about urban change, a video installation exploring urban landscape and underground space
This is the latest entry in the rode work series of video works that view forms of urban change (post-disaster reconstruction, urban development, etc.) from the POV of a skateboard. Ongoing since 2017, the highly anticipated newest work deals with the underground parts of the city. Though rarely seen in our everyday lives, Tokyo’s subterranean spaces actually form the foundational infrastructure of the city and have continued to increase as the capital has developed. Presented both outdoors and underground in the city, this project takes us places that we don’t normally get to experience, offering fresh perspectives on Tokyo.
