Moving Cloud is a mobile device that transforms meteorological data into experience. It sits at the intersection of art, science and public space, proposing a new way for people to relate to the atmospheric and climatic environment.
The piece operates as a weather station, collecting real-time data —temperature, humidity, pressure, airborne particles, etc.— and translating it into visual and sound languages. This translation aims to create a perceptual experience that allows people to “feel” the climate beyond its numerical representation.
Formally, the speculative artefact draws inspiration from the idea of a cloud: a light, flexible structure in constant transformation. Through translucent materials and a range of sensors and devices, the piece takes on an almost organic behaviour, evoking and reinterpreting meteorological processes.
The project also introduces a performative dimension. Designed to move and be installed across different urban contexts, it offers a live, close and evolving experience for the public.
The project was produced during a residency with AEMET, Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, and is currently on display at the Climate Biennial, taking place in Avilés (Asturias, Spain) during the summer of 2026. The piece will become part of the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition’s Art and Climate Collection.
Moving Cloud is essentially a meteorological station built from scratch in our studio. Its modular design means that each sensor connects via Wi-Fi, using an ESP32, to a Raspberry Pi that controls the entire system through a configurable interface.
Its sensors measure temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure at both ground and roof level; PM10 and PM2.5 through Sensor.Community; wind speed and direction; light levels and solar radiation; rainfall; and GPS location. It also includes a camera for monitoring sky conditions.
The system is equipped with a loudspeaker and LED panels that translate the collected data into sounds and familiar messages, creating a visual and sonic atmosphere that changes according to the sensor readings.
In addition, Nubemóvil can collect water and turn it into vapour, recreating the process through which clouds are formed. This vapour system is activated when changes in atmospheric pressure are detected.
All the data generated by Nubemóvil is transmitted online and made available on our website. The data recorded during its journeys can also be explored here.
The system can be carried by hand or transported by bicycle and deployed within minutes. It can operate autonomously using a solar panel and battery, or be connected to mains electricity when installed in a fixed location.
